Squad Safe A Practical Guide to Athlete Welfare and Culture Change in Cheerleading

I recently had the pleasure of attending the launch of a new book: ‘Squad Safe: A Practical Guide to Athlete Welfare and Culture Change in Cheerleading’ by Joanna Gamper Cuthbert.

Joanna has extensive experience as an athlete and a coach. She is now Chair of the Board of Sport Cheer England (SCE), the National Governing Body for cheerleading in England.

The event took place at Impact Dance, located in the historic Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. It provided a perfect space for meaningful conversation about safeguarding and creating a safer culture in cheerleading.

Attendees included individuals from the cheerleading world along with safeguarding experts, sport scientists, and lots of friends and family.

In her book, Joanna discusses how leadership development and embedding safeguarding best practice can help create a more positive future for cheerleading culture. She draws from her own personal experiences along with some real-world examples to explore how we can better approach athlete welfare.

Safeguarding thinking and practices are constantly evolving as we strive to foster safer environments for everyone to enjoy sport. This book offers valuable insights and learning that support our collective journey towards safer sport.
