A Safeguarding Message from our CEO, Stuart Sale.

The Ann Craft Trust joins others in condemning the violence that has erupted in the last week across many parts of the UK.

It has upset me personally and I know many reading this will have been affected similarly.  The horrific actions of one person in Southport have been used to spread divisive, racially motivated rhetoric, which has no place in any society.

It is brought into even sharper focus when we apply a safeguarding lens – many of the people targeted have already been subjected to terrible ordeals and have arrived in the UK looking to avoid further abuse and harm.  As human beings, we must continue to act to safeguard these individuals – you can contact the charity  Migrant Help for further advice or information about the support available to those seeking asylum, or who are already in the UK.

And what if we apply a safeguarding lens to those who have joined in the mindless violence?  A number of those involved will have been manipulated or psychologically coerced into their actions through the words of others, believing their actions are for a just cause.  Whilst I, and everyone at the Ann Craft Trust, unequivocally condemn these actions, my thoughts turn to how we can make a change for good.  The Exit Hate Trust works with people and their families in the belief that everyone deserves a second chance.  They use their lived experience to show people that ALL extremism is wrong in a way that is supportive and not judgmental.  If you, a family member or someone you support professionally have been affected in this way, contact Exit Hate who can offer you the advice and support you need.

As the week has gone on, there are seeds of hope where there seemed to be none – the vision of the Ann Craft Trust is that “we can stop the abuse of all adults through raising awareness, building understanding, and working together.” The terrible scenes we’ve witnessed have demonstrated the power of the community, many of whom have come together to show unity and strength, working as one.

So, my glass remains half full that, if we work together, we can stop the abuse of ALL adults.
